Its amazing what the early explorers achieve with so little equipment and lack of mapping.
There are so little places left that have been untapped.

Goodness, Matt, you make it sound as though it was the Dark Ages!
Amundsen had skis, reindeer-skin clothing, compasses, thermometers, sledgemeter, a sextant, tent with sewn-in groundsheet, a Primus stove, etc. -- obviously all of the equipment he needed.
