I have had students who knit with the needle under one arm, and saw it done in France as well, but never needles that long! Great plate.

This is long-ago now, but I suppose it's never too late to correct one's mistake. "An. 10" is Year 10 of the French Republic, not 1810. The Republican year started on 23 September, so the date of this fashion plate was probably around 1802. Très chic either way, though!
